How to Clean Ceiling Fan Blades

A clean ceiling fan blade.

The problem with ceiling fans is that they are always collecting dust. And even though you can’t always see it, you know it's there. When you finally get around to cleaning your dusty fan blades, you end up showering the entire room in a dust storm. If this sounds like your experience, we have a simple cleaning tip that only requires an old pillowcase and a step stool.

How to Clean Ceiling Fans with your Pillowcase

  1. Stand up on a secure foot stool and slip an old pillow case around one of the fan blades. Be careful not to knock off any dust during this step.
  2. With the pillowcase covering the length of the fan blade, slide the pillow case off of the blade. Make sure enough pressure is applied to the top and bottom of the blade so that the pillowcase takes the dust with it.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the remaining dusty fan blades. Once again, be extremely careful not to fall.
  4. To clean your pillowcase, go outside and turn it inside out. Give it a good shake and run it through the wash if you like. Keep it with your cleaning supplies until the next time you need to clean a dusty fan.

How To Clean Ceiling Fans Without A Ladder

If you don't have a ladder or step stool, don't worry! You can still clean your ceiling fan blades. Here are a few ideas:

  • Extendable Duster: These are designed to reach high places and have a pivoting head to clean fan blades from below.
  • Vacuum Cleaner: Use an extension wand and a brush attachment to remove dust without getting too close to the fan.
  • Long-Handled Broom: For high ceilings, try attaching a microfiber cloth to the end of a broom handle (secure it with a rubber band).

Remember to always be cautious when cleaning high areas and make sure the fan is turned off before you start.

The pillowcase trick is the easiest and best way to clean fan blades without transferring dust all over your bed, floor or coffee table.
